Job Overview:

APTIM Jacksonville, Florida office is seeking a mid-level Environmental Scientist (geologist ,hydrogeologist, or environmental scientist) to join our team of engineers, scientists, and technicians who are passionately committed to safely solving our clients' environmental concerns. The qualified candidate will be a hands-on scientist who is dedicated to completing assigned tasks with precision and accuracy, both in terms of technical knowledge and field duties. The Environmental Scientist is a professional position providing support for a range of environmental and infrastructure projects funded by private and government clients. The scientist will perform a variety of office and field work that includes collection of soil, water, and other environmental media samples for laboratory analysis; installation of soil borings and monitor wells; remedial system installation and operation, environmental compliance inspections, natural resource assessments, and support activities. Work will include primarily office tasks, but also field tasks necessary to complete environmental assessment, remediation and infrastructure projects. The work mix initially is expected to be 70% office and 30% field.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Provides technical support to clients in a variety of work scopes including but not limited to: environmental site characterization, monitoring, permitting, regulatory reporting, Phase I and Phase II due diligence, wetlands and wildlife surveys, and residential and commercial construction.

  • Collects and interprets soil, groundwater, and air sample analytical data.

  • Executes field work, maintains project schedule and budgetary goals, and supervises contractors.

  • Work will often involve use of instrumentation or equipment and may include the installation, calibration and/or maintenance of equipment or instrumentation associated with a particular job site.

  • Conducts work independently or as part of a project team and can adapt to rapidly changing site conditions or client requirements.

  • Adheres to established health and safety policies and procedures and executes work in a safe and conscientious manner.

  • Site Investigations in accordance with FDEP SOPs, ASTM Standards, and client requirements.

  • Supports environmental permitting and permit compliance projects.

  • Drafts technical documents for regulatory agencies and private clients.

  • Understands technical concepts, evaluation of results, plans, reports, and ensures conformance to applicable technical standards as well as company policies and procedures.

  • Manages schedule and balances multiple priorities to meet project targets and timelines.

  • Utilizes best practices and knowledge of internal and external business systems to improve products or services as a collaborative member of the APTIM team.

  • Duties may also include overlap with APTIM's industrial hygiene group including inspections, assessment and sampling for asbestos, lead-based paint, indoor air, and other materials/chemicals.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Environmental Science, Geology, or related field.

  • 2 - 8 years work experience in the field, primarily related to environmental services including sites assessment, well/soil boring installations, property transfer due diligence, environmental permit sampling, compliance inspections, wildlife and wetlands surveys, and supervising contractors.

  • 2 -- 8 years of experience in the office preparing text, tables, figures, field documentation and design drawings and calculations for environmental reports. Strong written and oral communication skills are required.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Knowledge and understanding of state and federal environmental regulations is a plus.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Excellent time management skills and ability to manage multiple activities on an on-going basis by given deadline

  • Must be able to safely operate a company vehicle.

  • The following certifications are a plus: 40-hour OSHA-HAZWOPER training, professional wetland scientist, licensed asbestos inspector.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in Florida geologic and natural habitat environments.

  • Experience with Chapters 62-777, 62-780, 62-340 Florida Administrative Code.

  • Experience with FDEP, WMD, and FWC permitting
