JOB SUMMARY: 

This position can be filled in Jacksonville or Tallahassee and will focus primarily on employment law and litigation matters, and assist with ethics and compliance. This position will serve as the lead Employment Attorney for the company, performing duties such as drafting legal documents, conducting legal research, providing opinions, managing outside counsel, conducting training and advising Citizens management and staff on employment issues. This position will report to the Director of Ethics and Compliance within the Division of Legal Services and provide support in implementing the corporate Ethics and Compliance Program.

JOB DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Model ethical behavior and executes job responsibilities in accordance with Citizens core values, ethics and information protection policies.

Provide legal advice and services to management and staff in the following areas of concentration:

    • Employment law
    • Procurement of employment-related corporate insurance
    • Litigation supervision, including management of employment related outside counsel and recommendation of selection of outside counsel

    • Providing support to the HR Division to proactively address emerging employment issues

    • Monitoring implementation of new employment legislation and regulations

Provide ongoing support to the Director of Ethics and Compliance in implementing the Ethics and Compliance Program including assisting with the annual compliance certification process.

Provide legal advice in other various areas of concentration such as:

    • Development and revision of corporate policies
    • Sunshine law, public records, and records retention
    • Ethics and Compliance

General Responsibilities:

    • Perform advanced research and analysis in areas of law and policy, often involving novel and complex issues.

    • Draft and edit form letters, pleadings, motions and discovery.
    • Prepares reports and legal opinions on relevant issues as directed.

    • Provide other high-level legal services as directed by the General Counsel and other Legal management.

 

Training:  Prepare, review, and/or present training on employment law and related issues.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • JD and admitted to FL Bar
  • 7 years of relevant experience as a lawyer in a firm, corporate or government setting

  • 5 years of which must include substantial employment law experience (10 years is preferred)

  • 2 years may include experience (in any combination) with ethics, compliance, and administrative, civil or corporate law

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of Florida Rules of Civil Procedure, Florida Rules of Evidence and Florida Rules of Appellate Procedure as applied in employment law cases.

  • Strong comprehensive knowledge of federal and state employment law.

  • Familiarity with the Florida Code of Ethics and Open Government requirements

  • Advanced skill in legal analysis, critical thinking, legal counseling, and problem solving; creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems; good legal and business judgment

  • Ability to be both proactive and reactive – in a fast-past, highly-visible, heavily regulated legal entity

  • Strong sense of urgency, personal responsibility, accountability; self-motivated, efficient, effective

  • Ability to initiate, organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple and complex projects and cases

  • Strong ability to effectively communicate and interact with internal and external business partners, attorneys, vendors and other critical internal and external business partners.

  • Forward-thinking and creative; confidence to present and advocate for implementation of ideas

  • Track record of building and leveraging strong relationships internally and externally, resulting in successful implementation of strategic priorities, operational improvements and corporate objectives

  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of team, to lead, follow, and collaborate.

  • Ability to handle sensitive and critical information appropriately

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and presentation skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
