The Director of Marketing is responsible for managing Sy-Klone International's marketing team, with a particular focus on product development, shaping the innovation pipeline, and advancing the organization's intellectual property strategy. From a team leader standpoint, the director guides and collaborates on core marketing activities, including multi-channel content development, customer communication and training, program development, product management, and cross-functional projects. As an individual thought leader and executor, the role steers new product development and innovation initiatives from concept-to-launch, inclusive of voice of the customer (VOC) product needs, business case composition, close partnership with research and development on design (and ultimately testing), determination of intellectual property potential (and filings, if relevant), project management of production readiness, and new product introduction (NPI). The position is responsible for ongoing market, competitor, patent, and trademark analysis.

The ideal candidate is a strong cross-functional partner and people leader with a broad base of marketing expertise in B2B settings, preferably in manufacturing or other industrial end markets. The candidate will continue to elevate the brand, messaging, and impact of Sy-Klone through marketing activities. Additionally, he/she should have a demonstrated track record of managing technically-engineered and proprietary products through their development and early lifecycle, and have familiarity with intellectual property assets, documentation, and processes. These skills and experiences will be applied to market/competitor scanning and analysis, translating the voice of the customer and market findings into actionable insights, developing marketing briefs for new product concepts/enhancements, liaising with internal stakeholders and outside counsel on product development and intellectual property filings, and bringing new products successfully to market.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Innovation Process Management: Compose product development and innovation strategy and lifecycle, including product development roadmap, identification of expansion opportunities and adjacent markets, competitor analysis and briefings, and business case development that feeds annual and multi-year operating financial plans; serve as facilitator and gatekeeper of monthly Product Development Committee
  • Introduce and manage the Voice of the Customer (VOC) program to capture market feedback and translate feedback into curated insights that advance cross-functional workstreams across product, engineering, commercial, and other functions
  • Act as a thought leader around product innovation, unlocking white space in the organization's product portfolio and identify gaps in current offerings based on outside-in perspective from industry experts, market analysis and VOC initiatives
  • Create product briefs for new product launches, lead design reviews, identify unique product features, conduct patent art field research, assess new intellectual property potential, develop brand/trademark strategy, and initiate claim development to inform patent composition and new product introduction process
  • Introduce new and enhance existing tools for analyzing and scanning industry, competitor, and patent activity to derive market insights and competitive intelligence
  • Build and support the team in building product marketing assets to champion new and current products, differentiating the product from competitors through positioning, messaging, unique selling propositions, and other foundational attributes
  • Develop and maintain a library of intellectual property findings, research, and insights; analyze activity and inform the business IP approach for proprietary new products; maintain intellectual property inventory of critical dates and milestones for patents and trademarks; manage renewal process, budget, and timelines
  • Liaise with outside counsel to develop, write, and submit patents for new products, consolidate claim structures, and review and respond to objections and/or examinations both domestically and internationally; collaborate with internal subject matter experts on review and approach
  • Assess and lead the response to potential patent infringement instances, challenges, and other feedback from the market
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, or related field, MBA preferred
  • 7-10+ years marketing experience wth healthy mix of creative, content development, digital and traditional media, product and program management
  • 3+ years people management
  • 3+ years experience managing technically-engineered and proprietary products, including operational understanding of intellectual property assets, documentation, and processes
  • Progressive experience leading product development and/or innovation initiatives, resulting in the successful launch of new products and product enhancements
  • Preferred experience managing intellectual property in the manufacturing industry, specifically in technical, engineered product(s) and across international markets
  • Ability to leverage analytical problem-solving skills and critical thinking to identify market gaps and solve complex internal and market-facing problems; strong decision-making background in ambiguous environments with a bias for action
  • Adept project management skills with a demonstrated track record of successfully developing and leading cross-functional initiatives on time and on budget
  • Traditional product marketing skills for a technical product, including copy and asset development across channels
  • Persuasive, yet concise communication skills and ability to develop written and presentation materials for corporate strategy and business review meetings
  • Strong collaboration skills with internal and external stakeholders
